Automotive

Ever since Henry Ford began mass-producing the Model T in 1910, Americans have loved automobiles. Today there are over two hundred million registered passenger vehicles in the United States, and we use cars, trucks, and motorcycles for transportation and recreation. If you’re passionate about cars, then a career in automotive repair and maintenance maybe perfect for you.

Today’s motor vehicles are increasingly complex. Most cars have computers and integrated electronic systems, and technicians must have a broad knowledge of vehicles’ complex components. They also must be able to work with digital reference materials and electronic diagnostic equipment.

Training can be a plus. In the next decade from 2006-2016, career opportunities for automotive technicians are expected to be very good for those who complete high school or postsecondary automotive training programs, and who earn ASE certification. Individuals without formal automotive training who seek entry-level jobs are likely to face competition.*
