Computers

Computers are a part of everyday life for millions of people. But computers aren’t foolproof. They break down, they require regular servicing, and they become obsolete.

There are many different computer career opportunities. Computer support specialists—including technical support specialists and help-desk technicians— provide support, technical assistance, and advice to users. Network and computer systems administrators design, install, and support computer systems for organizations, and maintain network efficiency. Computer security specialists may be responsible for keeping an organization’s computer network secure.

What are the job prospects in the next decade? According to the U.S. government, employment of computer support specialists and systems administrators is expected to increase by 18 percent from 2006 to 2016. This is much faster than the average for all occupations.*

Many employers seek applicants with some college education. For some jobs a bachelor’s degree in computer science or information systems is a prerequisite. Entry-level jobs may require only a computer-related associate degree.
