If you enjoy working with your hands and using advanced technology, you should consider training for a career as a heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration (HVACR) technician. It’s not just about furnaces and fans—HVACR technicians work with sophisticated electronics and computer systems to deliver comfort to homes and offices.

HVACR technicians often specialize in either installation or maintenance and repair. They also may focus on heating, air-conditioning, or refrigeration systems. Some HVACR technicians specialize in one type of equipment such as commercial refrigeration, water-based heating systems, or even solar panels. Some technicians sell service contracts to their clients.

HVACR mechanics and installers are required to be licensed by some states and localities. As a result of the increasing sophistication of HVACR systems, employers often prefer to hire applicants who have completed technical school training. Many technical and trade schools, and junior and community colleges offer six-month to two-year HVACR programs.
