Teaching

Teachers help create tomorrow’s leaders and inspire young people to excel. If you enjoy working with kids of all ages, perhaps you should consider training to become a teacher.

What does it take to become a preschool, elementary, or secondary school teacher? Most teachers have earned a bachelor’s degree from a teacher education program, and then obtained a license. For those who have a college degree in another field, many states now offer alternative routes to licensure. Private school teachers need a bachelor’s degree but may not have to be licensed. Preschool teachers and vocational education teachers may not need a bachelor’s degree.

Teaching is a big field—there were about four million teachers in the U.S. in 2006. Even with average employment growth, the U.S. government predicts that 479,000 additional teacher positions will be created in the decade from 2006 to 2016.* That’s a lot of opportunities!
