Shorter University was founded by educator Luther Rice Gwaltney in 1873 as the Cherokee Baptist Female College. We are coeducational, and we strive to provide a quality liberal arts education within a Christian context. We offer traditional degree programs at our campus in Rome, Georgia, and adult-degree classes in Rome and at our facility in Atlanta, Georgia.
Annual enrollment is nearly 3,000 traditional students and adult learners. Financial aid is available to those who qualify. We offer intercollegiate athletics and a wide variety of campus activities to create a rich learning environment.

Shorter University encourages lifelong learning. The associate and bachelor’s degrees offered by the Professional Studies Programs are designed for working adults who have advanced their personal education through career experiences, professional or military schools, college or university courses, or in-service training.
The courses in the Professional Studies Programs are career-focused and connect theory to practice. Instructional methods include mini-lectures, case studies, seminars, simulations, role-playing, and a student project related to the student's professional goals. Many of the courses are three semester credit hours.
Financial Aid
At Shorter University, our goal is to help make college education affordable. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.
The Financial Aid office assists students by advising them on the best financial approach for paying for their education while at Shorter University. A wide range of financial aid programs is available to qualified students, including federal and state loans and grants, private loans, institutional scholarships, community grants and scholarships, and tuition payment plans.
