Do you dream of assisting a lawyer in the defense of a murder suspect?
Or helping to prosecute offenders in court? How about getting involved in high-stakes
lawsuits? There are many rewarding careers in the field of law that provide entry-level
opportunities.
Paralegals—also called legal assistants—help lawyers prepare
for hearings, trials, closings, and corporate presentations. Paralegals might research
cases and judicial decisions, and prepare written reports. Court reporters record
official proceedings in the courtroom. They also capture press conferences, product
introductions, and corporate sales meetings.
Many employers seek applicants with an associate degree or a certificate
in paralegal studies. How about your job prospects? The U.S. government reports
that employment of paralegals and legal assistants is projected to grow 22 percent
between 2006 and 2016, much
faster than the average
for all occupations. Employment of court reporters is projected to grow 25 percent
during the same period, much faster
than the average for all occupations.*
